The Bow Valley Helicopter Noise Alliance (BVHNA) is a Canmore-based volunteer group. BVHNA is not “anti-helicopter”. Our objective is to ensure that the Canmore Municipal Heliport is properly sized and located, and that helicopter tourism does not disturb people and wildlife.

How you can make a difference

This is the first and only time Canmore’s Council will be hearing your concerns on the Canmore Municipal Heliport lease renewal. If you are concerned about helicopter noise, and environmental impacts, have your voice heard by writing a letter and speaking at the online public meeting (see below).

In a nutshell, the new 10-year lease represents “business as usual”. That is, no meaningful reduction in the number of helicopter sightseeing flights, or their noise, as compared to the previous 10-year lease. Approximately 80% of total flights at Canmore’s municipally-owned heliport are sightseeing flights, which are allowed to operate 7 days a week, 365 days a year. So, if you were affected by helicopter noise during the past 10 years, you will be affected for the next 10 years as well unless Council makes key changes to the new lease.

You might mention

  • Your experiences with past helicopter noise volumes and intensity
  • Impacts on your quality of life
  • The new lease is unacceptable because:
    • it represents “business as usual” for sightseeing flights
    • there is an insufficient reduction in sightseeing flights
      • BVHNA recommends a max. of 15 tourist flights per day with an annual cap of 750 tourist flights
    • sightseeing flights occur 7 days a week, 365 days a year
    • there is no meaningful reduction in GHG emissions

You might also mention

  • downsizing the municipal heliport by not allowing sightseeing flights
  • relocating the heliport
    • Alpine currently has a second sightseeing heliport at the casino
  • reduce sightseeing flights each year of the lease
  • shorten the lease period to a maximum of 3 to 5 years
  • all helicopter flight data should be publicly available (the new lease keeps it secret)
  • have a more robust interactive public discussion following this public meeting
